Introduction to BILD Lab

Hi I'm Josh, founder of BILD Lab.

This is my first blog and I wanted to introduce you to BILD Lab and what we do.

Like many tradies, I left school early to try and make some money. From the age of 16, I spent my time in a carpentry apprenticeship learning all about building, extensions, renovations, and new homes. Small jobs, big jobs, deckings, pergolas, fences, retaining walls, new bathrooms, new doors, etc. Then in my early 20s, I started my own business as a carpenter. Over the next two decades or so, I had various jobs in the building industry including project manager, insurance inspector, quality inspector, compliance manager, maintenance manager, and more.

Around my mid-30s, I was feeling unfulfilled in my job as a quality inspector, and my wife encouraged me to go to university. I ended up studying law and science. Mathematics was my favourite subject at school except for woodwork, which felt like less of a school subject and more like a fun hobby that we got to do once a week. See, my dad and brother were also carpenters and builders, and for me, working with wood was always something I loved to do. I still practice woodworking in the shed.

Anyway, back to the story. I don’t really remember the reason I chose to study law, except that my wife encouraged me to try something “different”, that I wasn’t otherwise considering. Once I was enrolled, I started to develop this definite purpose of being able to help people understand the building industry from all angles – the construction side of things, and the legal aspects as well. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the genesis of BILD Lab.

Once I had this goal in mind, I set out to achieve it. I completed my studies, and started to envisage how BILD Lab would look. I am still on that journey today. But the dream is real and BILD Lab is open.

There is plenty more to come, so stay tuned.

P.S. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to reach out.

Kind regards,
Josh Whittingham
